The da Vinci Robot
The da Vinci Surgical System
The System is the first totally “intuitive” laparoscopic surgical robot in existence. As of today, the FDA has cleared the System for use in performing many surgical procedures including general laparoscopic surgery, thoracoscopic (chest) surgery, laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, and thoracoscopically assisted cardiotomy procedures.
The da Vinci Surgical System is a computer-enhanced minimally invasive surgical system consisting of three components: the InSite® Vision System, Surgical Cart and Surgeon Console. The InSite Vision System provides the surgeon with a true minimally invasive 3-D view of the surgical field including depth of field, magnification and high resolution. The Surgical Cart includes the EndoWrist® Instruments. It has up to four Robotic Prostatectomy whereby the laparoscope and up to three EndoWrist Instruments are inserted. The EndoWrist Instruments are designed to mimic the movement of the human hands, wrists and fingers. The extensive range of motion allows precision that is not available in standard minimally invasive procedures. The Surgeon Console contains the master controls that the surgeon uses to manipulate the EndoWrist instruments. The handles or “Masters” translate the surgeon’s natural hand and wrist movements into corresponding, precise and scaled movements. The EndoWrist Instruments are only able to move when commanded by the surgeon.
Urologic Surgery Chennai
When medication and other non-surgical treatments are unavailable or cannot relieve symptoms, surgery is the recommended treatment for many conditions that affect the male reproductive organs and urinary tract organs. These conditions include, among other things, prostate cancer, ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction, bladder and kidney cancer and vesicoureteral reflux.
Fortunately, less invasive surgical options are available to many people facing urologic surgery. The most common is laparoscopy, which uses small incisions. Laparoscopy can be very effective for many routine procedures, but due to the surgical instruments involved, it is typically not used for more complex urologic surgeries.
Facing urologic surgery can create a great deal of anxiety. Typically, a common concern is: “Will my body function normally after surgery? Traditional open urologic surgery using large incisions to access the pelvic organs has been the standard approach when surgery is needed. But there are several drawbacks to this procedure including significant post-surgical pain, a long recovery, and an unpredictable and potentially long-term impact on continence and sexual function.
Fortunately, less invasive surgical options are available to many people facing urologic surgery. The most common is laparoscopy, which uses small incisions. Laparoscopy can be very effective for many routine procedures, but limitations of this technology prevent its use for more complex urologic surgeries.
A new category of surgery, the da Vinci ® Surgical System, is being used by an increasing number of surgeons worldwide for prostatectomy and other urologic procedures. It is a minimally invasive approach, using the latest in surgical and robotics technologies, and is ideal for delicate urologic surgery. This includes prostatectomy, where the target site is not only tightly confined but also surrounded by nerves affecting urinary control and sexual function. Using da Vinci, your surgeon has a better tool to spare those delicate and critical surrounding nerves. This may improve your recovery experience and clinical outcomes with such benefits as:
- Significantly less pain
- Less blood loss
- Fewer complications
- Less scarring
- A shorter hospital stay
- And a faster return to normal daily activities
As with any surgery, these benefits cannot be guaranteed, as surgery is unique to each patient and procedure. The da Vinci Surgical System is considered safe and effective, but may not be appropriate for everyone. Always ask your doctor about all treatment options, as well as the benefits and risks.
Benefits of Robotic Surgery:
The da Vinci Surgical System is changing surgical procedures, which may improve both the patient’s experience and surgical outcomes.
MIS (minimally invasive surgery) reduces trauma to the patient by allowing surgery to be performed through small ports or “keyholes” rather than large incisions, resulting in shorter recovery times, fewer complications, and a reduced hospital stay.
By integrating computer-enhanced technology with the surgeon’s expertise, the da Vinci System enables surgeons to perform extremely delicate and precise minimally invasive surgery (MIS).
The patient may experience the following benefits
- Reduced trauma to the body
- Less anesthesia
- Often less blood loss and the need for transfusions
- Less post-operative pain and discomfort
- Less risk of infection
- Shorter hospital stay
- Faster recovery and return to normal daily activities
- Less scarring and improved cosmesis
Benefits to the Surgeon
- Enhanced 3-D Visualization
- Improved Dexterity
- Greater Surgical Precision
- Improved Access
- Increased Range of Movement
- Reproducibility
- Simplifies many existing MIS surgical techniques
- Makes difficult MIS operations routine
- Makes new MIS procedures possible in most surgical specialties
Enhanced 3-D Visualization: Provides the surgeon with a magnified, true 3-dimensional view of the operating field. This direct and natural hand-eye coordination is similar to that experienced in open surgery with the additional benefit of “all-around” vision and the ability to zoom in or zoom out.
Improved Dexterity: Permits the surgeon to move instruments with such accuracy that the current definition of surgical precision is exceeded.
Greater Surgical Precision: Permits the surgeon to move instruments with such accuracy that the current definition of surgical precision is exceeded.
Improved Access: Surgeons perform complex surgical maneuvers through 1-cm ports, eliminating the need for large traumatic incisions.
Increased Range of Motion: EndoWrist® Instruments provide a full range of motion and the ability to rotate instruments more than 360 degrees through tiny incisions.
Reproducibility: Enhances the surgeon’s ability to perform repetitive, technically precise maneuvers such as endoscopic suturing and dissection.
Simplifies many existing MIS procedures: Operations routinely performed today using MIS techniques may be performed more quickly and easily with the da Vinci Surgical System. The System looks and feels like open surgery to the surgeon.
Makes difficult MIS operations routine: Some procedures have been adapted for port-based techniques but are extremely difficult and are rarely performed and are performed if at all by only a select number of highly skilled surgeons. The da Vinci Surgical System enables more surgeons at additional institutions to perform these procedures routinely with confidence.
Makes new MIS procedures possible in most surgical specialties: A number of procedures that cannot be performed minimally invasively today may be performed through 1-cm ports by surgeons using the da Vinci Surgical System. The intuitive motion-enhanced 3-D Vision system and a comprehensive suite of EndoWrist® Instruments enable new breakthroughs in surgical techniques.
With its 3-D view, the da Vinci Surgical System aids the surgeon in more easily identifying vital anatomies such as the delicate nerves and blood vessels surrounding specific anatomy. The EndoWrist® Instruments provide the surgeon with the dexterity not available using conventional laparoscopic instruments to perform a delicate and precise surgical dissection, reconstruction, or removal of a specific tissue.
